American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe had a brief, but controversial career. Now, 20 years after his death in 1989, there is still plenty to be discovered.

From 14th October 2009, Alison Jacques Gallery will present Robert Mapplethorpe - 'A Season in Hell' (selected works). Mapplethorpe is famous for his large-scale, highly stylized black and white portraits, Polaroids, flower photos and homo-erotic images. Fuelled by a passion for classical sculpture and strongly influenced by his repressive Catholic upbringing he quickly found a way to express his ideas about sexuality, love and death through visual symbolism.
